Southern Maine Health Care’s (SMHC) mission is to improve the health and health care of the communities we serve. We are pleased to offer the following health education programs during the month of October:

Cancer Care   

Macrobiotics Natural Foods Cooking Class
Macrobiotics is a natural approach to health and sickness. A macrobiotic diet consists of whole foods and cooking techniques brimming with health giving qualities. Should you be facing a serious illness or simply looking for better health, we encourage you to explore the possibilities. Presented by Macrobiotic Master Chef Connie Arnold.

Childbirth Education

Daddy Survival Class
This class is for first time Dads who will be looking to get more information in a brief version of the amazing year ahead. Topics include: planning and preparing for your new addition, labor from a man's point of view and what to expect once you get home; from the first few weeks to the changing year ahead.

Safe Baby - Infant Safety & Infant/Toddler CPR
This class provides a non-certificate course by the American Heart Association to family and friends, as well as basic home safety for your baby as they grow.

Third Thursday of each month (October 12), 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Classes/Events

Complementary & Integrative Therapies: For People Living With Cancer
You have many choices to make before, during, and after your cancer treatment.  Have you considered complementary and integrative therapies?  Come and meet with various providers and gather information and resources about what they are, reasons people with cancer choose these services and experience a complementary service. We will have Massage and Reiki Therapists, Acupuncturists, Chiropractors, Essential Oils for Healing, and so much more...

Adult Day Services for Alzheimer’s & Dementia – Sanford
SMHC’s Adult Day Service Program promotes the well-being of people with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Participants enjoy different activities in a therapeutic environment designed to maximize their current abilities. For the caregiver, the Adult Day Service Program offers support and education, as well as a break from the responsibility of providing 24-hour care.

Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Total Joint Replacement Education Class
Designed for those considering total joint replacement. Participants will learn what to expect before, during and after their procedure and stay in the hospital. Open to anyone interested.

First Thursday (November 2), 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and third Thursday (November 16), 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Weight Loss Surgery Information Session
Is weight loss surgery the right decision for you? Have you tried the other weight loss methods and nothing seems to work? If you're considering weight loss surgery, then this introductory class is for you. Information will be presented about nutrition, resources, and other topics to help with the lifestyle and emotional adjustments you may face.

Second Wednesday of each month (November 8), 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Smoking Cessation Sessions
There’s never been a better time to quit.
Southern Maine Health Care offers a smoking cessation program involving one-on-one sessions designed to offer the tobacco user all the information and tools required to become tobacco free.  The Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist will offer insights into smoking habits, stress and the relationship it has to smoking, as well as nicotine replacement options available. Ongoing support is also valuable in guiding the tobacco user to become tobacco free.

Support Groups

Alzheimer’s Support Group
Open to anyone that has a loved one diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or any form of dementia. The group helps participants understand the process of the disease and allows for sharing and questions. Those attending the daytime support group are able to bring their loved one with them who will attend the Pavilion’s Activity group during the support group. The group is supported by the Alzheimer Association of Maine.

First Wednesday of each month (November 1), 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and third Wednesday (September 20), 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Breast Cancer Survivors Support Group
Second and fourth Thursday of each month (November 9) 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Cancer Support Group - Saco
We welcome those affected by cancer and their family/friends. Support, information, and networking will be provided by skilled facilitators.

Fourth Monday of each month (November 20), 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Location: SMHC Walk-In Care, 655 Main Street (entrance on Ross Road), Saco - 2nd floor Conference Room

Cancer Survivor Support Group - Sanford
First and third Friday of each month (November 3, 17): 4:00 to 5:00 pm

Second and fourth Friday of each month (November 10, 24): 6:00 to 7:00 pm

Mature Women’s Support Group
This group discusses issues pertaining to life as we grow older. This is a 50+ age group.

Parkinson's Disease Support Group

A place to share information and support for people with Parkinson’s disease, their families, caregivers and those in related health fields.
