Biddeford-Saco Country Club Ladies Association donates over $13,000 to SMHC Center for Breast Care

September 16, 2017

The morning of July 21, Helene Langley, breast nurse navigator at Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC), greeted 140 enthusiastic female golfers at the 21st annual Pink on the Links golf tournament with breast cancer survivors by her side. This is the sixth year that Laura Blanchette and the Biddeford-Saco Ladies Association of the Biddeford-Saco Country Club donated all proceeds from their annual event to SMHC’s Center for Breast Care.

Yet another success, this year’s tournament raised $13,784.50 for SMHC’s Center for Breast Care.  Overall, the Biddeford-Saco Ladies Association has contributed over $74,000 to support care for breast cancer survivors in their community.

"The Pink on the Links tournament is invaluable to our breast care program," said Langley. "We support close to 100 women every year in our community who are diagnosed with breast cancer. The funds from the event help these individuals directly as they enable us to provide them with quality educational materials at the time of diagnosis, during their treatment and at the time of their survivorship visit." Funds raised from the tournament also help the Center support individual sessions with a social worker, support groups, and special speakers on topics of interest to patients.

"Every other Thursday, I hear laughter down the hall from my office," Sue Hadiaris, senior vice president and chief planning officer at SMHC, shared with the crowd after a warm day on the course. "The laughter comes from survivors in the breast cancer support group that meets at SMHC. Cancer is tough, but their positivity reminds me that together these women are strong and hopeful. Your donations and support from the community and each other make all the difference."
