Student Nurse Program
Maine Medical Center has enjoyed a long history as a principal clinical site of choice for year round nursing academic placements and holds Academic Affiliate Standard Agreements with 27 nursing programs within and well beyond the state of Maine. MMC's nursing leadership is well represented on the Advisory Councils of our four primary local affiliates and acts as strong advocates for, and contributors to current and evolving academic initiatives with practice partners.
Below is a list of our primary local affiliates:
- Saint Joseph's College of Maine
- Southern Maine Community College
- University of New England
- University of Southern Maine
MMC supports more than 1,200 undergraduate clinical placements annually from these four affiliates on a trimester basis with requests increasing each year. Senior practicum placements approximate 160 students per year for an average of 200 hours per student of practice with one on one MMC R.N. preceptor oversight. In addition to senior requests from the four primary affiliates, we also are a regular senior placement site for Husson University; University of Maine, Orono; University of Maine Fort Kent University of New Hampshire.
Graduate degree student practicums requiring MMC Master's prepared and/or Advanced Practice R.N. preceptors are provided for students from Maine, New England and beyond and include experiences for Nurse Practitioner students, Clinical Nurse Specialist students, Clinical Nurse Leader students and students in other post-graduate specialties.
Our partnerships have allowed MMC to attract and recruit stellar graduates to begin their careers right here at MMC. In addition, MMC serves as a rich resource of clinical faculty for our academic partners. The opportunities for MMC nurses to become faculty and/or clinical preceptors have played a role in retaining our experts and promoting their continued development and satisfaction.
MMC's Department of Nursing provides for an annual summer student nurse employment program for students which has been a highly successful and sought after program over the last 30 years. SNEP is designed for nursing students entering their final year of nursing school. The program offers 25-30 individual students the opportunity to experience, first-hand, the role of the professional nurse and to augment his or her clinical experiences during a paid work program under the guidance of R.N. clinical preceptors.
The SNEP program has demonstrated achievement in providing career growth opportunities for our internal staff (Certified Nursing Assistants entering their last academic year) as well as engaging external students in opportunities at MMC prior to their last year that ultimately lead to career choices following graduation.
