Spring Harbor Hospital – Visitor Policy - Effective 7/6/21
This is an update to the Visitor Policy imposed on Wednesday, March 18th. The revised policy is effective July 6, 2021 and shall remain in effect until further notice.
VISITORS/ESCORTS are not permitted on Spring Harbor Hospital (SHH) campus, except in a designated outdoor visitation space, or lobby meeting room during winter months and/or inclement weather, provided the facility implements all of the following safety, care, and infection prevention and control measures. All exceptions will be reviewed by the VPMA, Medical Director, or appropriate designee for any actions required.
- Visits must take place outside the building weather permitting or in the designated lobby meeting room at the front entrance of the hospital, sufficient staffing at the facility to meet patient care needs, and the health and well-being of the patient.
- Visitation in the lobby meeting room must be scheduled in the Outlook calendar in advance. Prioritization will be given to child/adolescent/developmental disorder patients.
- Units may limit the length of any visit, the days on which visits will be permitted, the hours during a day when visits will be permitted, and the number of times during a day or week a patient may be visited.
- No meals/snacks are permitted during the visit as this would require the removal of the face mask/face covering.
- SHH will post signage or provide a handout for visitors regarding signs and symptoms associated with COVID-19.
- Prior to the visit, SHH will provide the visitor instructions and requirements for visitation, including where to go upon arrival.
- A patient who is suspected or confirmed to be infected with COVID-19 cannot be visited.
- A Therapeutic Trial Visit (TTV) may be ordered if the treatment team determines this is clinically appropriate. If a TTV is not clinically indicated, the staff will accompany patient for the duration of the visit.
- Staff must be present during visitation.
- Patients and visitors must wear face masks or coverings for the duration of the visit.
- Visitors must be limited to not more than two individuals per visit. Visitors may be parents, guardians or primary support persons and must be 18 years of age or older.
- The nursing staff of the patient’s unit must screen each visitor prior to entering the building for symptoms. Any individual noting symptoms of COVID-19 infection1 will not be permitted to visit.
- Hand hygiene will be performed before and after the visit. Visitors will utilize the hand sanitizer located in the lobby before entering and upon exiting the lobby meeting room.
- Children under the age of 18 may visit by exception only, must be supervised at all times, maintain social distancing, and wear a face covering when age appropriate.
- A staff member(s) trained in patient safety and infection prevention and control measures must be present to monitor the outdoor designated space(s) and lobby meeting room.
- Monitoring of visitation is required. SHH will assess the number of staff necessary to ensure appropriate masking and social distancing are followed.
- All staff must wear face masks.
After Your Visit
- Any visitor who develops signs and symptoms of COVID-19 within 2 days after visiting must immediately notify SHH of the date they visited, and the patient they visited.
- This information must be communicated to the visitors at the time of their screening.
- Visitors will be educated concerning this requirement prior to their visit.
- Infection Control will immediately investigate the level of exposure of patients or staff to the visitor and the source control (face covering) that was used.
- CDC guidelines for the management of health care personnel who may have been exposed to COVID-19 will be followed.
- The SHH VPMA, Medical Director, patient’s care provider, or appropriate designee will follow up concerning any actions required. All exceptions will be requested through the Vice President of Medical Affairs (VPMA), Medical Director or appropriate designee.
Outside Food and Supplies (take-out, patient belongings, etc.)
- Outside food and supplies brought in for the patient will be permitted as long as the SHH belongings policy is followed and hand hygiene is performed after handling the packaging.
- Any food items will be brought to the patient’s unit and may not be consumed during the visit.
Service Specific Protocols
- Child and Adolescent Services: No more than two parent/guardian/caregivers per patient per day, every 7 days.
- Developmental Disorders Program: No more than two parent/guardian/caregivers per patient per day, every 7 days.
- Adult Services: No more than two primary support persons per patient per day, every 7 days. Primary support persons must be 18 years of age or older.
- Patient Discharges: Patients will be brought to a private location at the front entrance for discharge meeting and pick up.
- Admissions Department: One person permitted to accompany patient in the admission department only, provided space is sufficient to achieve compliance with guidance on social distancing. Individuals may not accompany the patient onto the unit.
- Patients Requiring Special Assistance (lawyers, assessments for discharge, clergy, etc.): If not covered by the previous exceptions, a patient may have visitation to provide the needed assistance or support, such necessity to be determined by care providers. All exceptions will be reviewed by the VPMA, Medical Director, or appropriate designee for any actions required.
These restrictions are for the protection of patients, employees, visitors, and the public, and consistent with guidance from governmental authorities, and are adopted for the purpose of reducing the potential for propagation of the COVID-19 virus. These restrictions are imposed by order of the Hospital President and Chief Medical Officer.
