Straight A’s Hospital Safety Score
Pen Bay Medical Center was recognized with “Straight A’s” from the Hospital Safety Score ranking from 2012 to 2017. The Hospital Safety Score measures compliance with nationally recognized standards of safe care practices in an effort to reduce harm and promote safety for patients.
Leapfrog Top Hospital
Pen Bay Medical Center has been designated as a “Top Hospital” for patient safety and health care quality practices by The Leapfrog Group, whose quality and safety survey is an important measure of a hospital’s commitment to patients’ well being.
Get With The Guidelines - Stroke Honor Roll Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award
Pen Bay Medical Center has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines® Target: Stroke Honor Roll Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence. PBMC earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. Get With The Guidelines - AFIB Silver Quality Achievement Award
Pen Bay Medical Center has received the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-AFIB Silver Quality Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association guidelines for the management of patients with atrial fibrillation. PBMC earned the award for meeting specific quality achievement measures at a set level for a designated period. These measures include providing appropriate medications and aggressive risk reduction therapies to prevent stroke, stabilize the heart rate and rhythm and treat additional heart disease. Before discharge, patients should also receive education and counseling on managing their condition and plans on follow-up care.
Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award – Stroke
Pen Bay Medical Center has received the American Stroke Association’s Get With the Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. This award honors the hospital for implementing best practices for stroke care and ensuring stroke patients receive the highest quality care according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations. Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval

The Joint Commission accreditation is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting certain performance standards. To earn and maintain The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™, an organization must undergo an on-site survey by a Joint Commission survey team at least every three years.
American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR)
Pulmonary Rehabilitation Services at Pen Bay Medical Center received full recertification by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) in 2018. Pen Bay Medical Center was recognized for its commitment to providing and improving the quality of life by enhancing high quality standards of care. AACVPR Program Certification is valid for three years.
American Diabetes Association Education Recognition Certificate
The prestigious American Diabetes Association Education Recognition Certificate for a quality diabetes self-management education program was awarded to the Pen Bay Healthcare Diabetes and Nutrition Care Center program. The program recognition is valid for four years through 2019 and has been continuously awarded since 2003. The American Diabetes Association believes that this program offers high-quality education that is an essential component of effective diabetes treatment. Vein Center accreditation by IAC
The Pen Bay Surgery and Wound Healing Center was granted accreditation by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) in Vein Center in the area of Superficial Venous Treatment and Management in June 2017. Pen Bay Surgery and Wound Healing Center is the first Vein Center in Maine to receive this accreditation. Learn more about the accreditation here.
