MMC participates in a variety of clinical trials to study new and improved medications, devices and surgical techniques, giving patients with vascular disease access to innovative treatment options that are not available anyplace else in Maine.

Vascular Surgery Residency

Maine Medical Center’s integrated vascular surgery residency program is designed to provide graduated, incremental training in both vascular and core general surgery throughout the course of the program.


We provide patients with limb-threatening PAD (Peripheral Arterial Disease) access to comprehensive revascularization treatments including:

  • Lower extremity bypass surgery 
  • Endarterectomy (surgical removal of atherosclerosis plaque) 
  • Angioplasty (including POBA, cutting balloon, drug eluting balloons, lithotripsy)
  • Atherectomy (minimally invasive removal of atherosclerosis plaque) 
  • Stenting (including drug coated stents)
  • Thrombolysis for arterial clot
  • Hybrid lower extremity re-vascularization (combined open and endovascular approaches)
  • Pedal and radial access procedures
  • CO2 angioplasty for patients with compromised renal function
  • Access to devices and treatments in clinical trials

We provide patients with aortic diseases access to comprehensive, state-of-the-art treatments. These conditions and therapies include:

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) – open surgery
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm – endovascular repair (EVAR)
  • Thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysm repair – open surgery
  • Complex endovascular aneurysm repair
  • Fenestrated endovascular aortic repair (FEVAR)
  • Chimney endovascular aortic repair (CHEVAR)
  • Branched endovascular iliac aneurysm repair (IBE)

We provide patients with carotid artery diseases access to comprehensive, state-of-the-art treatments including:

  • Carotid endarterectomy 
  • Carotid artery stenting (trans-femoral and TCAR)
  • Carotid artery aneurysm surgery 
  • Carotid body tumor surgery
  • Carotid artery fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD)

We provide patients with neurogenic, venous or arterial neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome access to comprehensive, state-of-the-art treatments including:

  • Venous lysis for axillo-subclavian DVT 
  • First rib resection
  • Scalene block for neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome
  • Scalenectomy for neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome
  • Subclavian artery aneurysm repair (open repair and endovascular repair)

We provide treatment for patients with rare vascular conditions including:

  • SMA syndrome
  • Popliteal entrapment
