Patients & Visitors

Visiting the Inpatient Unit

We have a family-friendly environment because we know that a stay in the hospital can be frightening for kids, and their families. That’s why we've incorporated family-friendly amenities throughout The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital (BBCH). These include private patient rooms that can accommodate a parent’s overnight stay, flexible visiting hours, and a parents’ lounge with computer, kitchenette, laundry and bathroom with shower, and children’s play areas. Our Pediatric Short Stay Unit on the main floor of the Coulombe Family Tower also offers private rooms with the same hospital amenities and access to Child Life specialists.

To ensure that hospitalized children keep up with their schoolwork while they are receiving care, BBCH has an on-site classroom, tutors and a hospital-based teacher. Educational assistance is provided through:
  • Small-group schooling
  • Bedside tutoring
  • Laptop computers with free Internet access
  • Monitoring of previously assigned academics

Parents’ Lounge & Support Services

For parents whose child is hospitalized, we offer an array of thoughtful services, amenities and resources. A parents’ lounge, located off the central atrium, offers:
  • Computer with Internet access
  • Kitchenette
  • Laundry area
  • Handicapped-accessible bathroom and shower

In addition, we offer:

  • A meditation/relaxation room
  • A resource library
  • A Ronald McDonald rest area that gives families a place for respite that’s not too far away from their child
  • Coverage for hospitalized kids so parents can relax and enjoy an adult night out
  • Access to Care Management resources by calling (207) 662-2120
  • Access to a chaplain, Board certified in pediatrics, for patients and families needing emotional support as well as spiritual and religious needs

What is a Hospitalist?

Pediatric hospitalists are Board certified pediatricians who specialize in caring for children and babies while they are in the hospital. Our team of pediatric hospitalists are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This allows the hospitalist to see patients as often as needed, which offers peace of mind for patients and families. Our pediatric hospitalists oversee all aspects of a child’s care. This includes:

  • Managing admission
  • Ordering tests and reviewing results
  • Consulting with specialists and communicating with the child’s regular pediatrician
  • Coordinating transfers and discharges
  • Providing an around-the-clock resource for parents who want information and reassurance about their child’s condition
  • Including parents on daily rounds so they can ask questions - and get answers – about their child’s condition and treatment, day or night
  • Support with discharge which makes the transition a smoother process at any time of day including instructions on homecare, follow up appointments and prescription information, if needed

Home & Hospice Care

BBCH wants patients to remain in or return to the comfort of their own home whenever possible and appropriate.
