Tim Harris

While Tim Harris was vacationing on a rafting trip in northern Maine with his wife Vivian, she noticed Tim’s face drooping and his speech slurred. Vivian knew immediately that this could be a stroke and called 9-1-1. Her quick thinking, along with the MaineHealth Telestroke Network, helped save Tim’s life.

“Either by the grace of God, or another force, I was transferred to Maine Medical Center (MMC) for a reason. It was obvious to my wife and I that I was meant to receive the best medical care possible delivered by a team of empathetic individuals who practice exemplary professionalism.” Tim Harris’ words convey the expertise that MMC has in treating complex stroke cases.

The MaineHealth Telestroke Network uses a two-way audio-video system positioned at several of Maine’s rural hospitals to connect rural providers to a neurological-specialist at MMC, the only Comprehensive Stroke Center in the state. MMC specialists help diagnosis the signs of a stroke and determine the best course of action to take when one occurs. Response time during a stroke is extremely important in order to preserve brain health and ensure the best recovery possible. Immediate treatment not only saves lives, but improves the quality of life after the stroke. Because of the quick diagnosis via the telestroke network and Dr. Jane Morris, Tim was able to be transferred to MMC where he received the right treatment, quickly.

As avid world travelers and outdoor adventurers, Tim and his wife Vivian were relieved and amazed that he was walking out of the hospital just two days later. “It’s an incredible world we live in” says Tim, from mountain climbing in Iceland to traveling through Ethiopia, Tim and Vivian can begin to plan their next adventure, seeing even more of the world, one step at a time.

MaineHealth Telestroke Network

When you're having a stroke, getting the right treatment quickly is very important. But many local hospitals do not have stroke experts on site. The MaineHealth Telestroke Network connects you and your local emergency care team with a stroke expert using two-way videoconferencing. The stroke expert can assess your condition remotely and recommend the best care plan.
