John and Dexter Falla

Kristin and Dan Falla, of Tenants Harbor, welcomed their twins into the world early, at just 33 weeks. They had planned to have the birth at LincolnHealth – Miles Maternity in Damariscotta, where they appreciated the ability to have a birth close to home and still be connected to the MaineHealth network. When Kristin went into labor early, an emergency C-section was required and performed at Miles in the middle of the night.

It was quickly determined that the babies were in need of immediate support at a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), as their underdeveloped lungs were not ready to breathe independently. A team of more than twenty providers from The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center was sent to support them, with each child having their own dedicated team. Using the finest expertise and equipment available from both facilities, the infants were stabilized and then transported with their teams for advanced care in Portland.

The family spent the next three and a half weeks in the NICU at The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center, supported through their first crucial days to gain strength. The seamless transition of care that they received from LincolnHealth to Maine Medical Center extended to the last few days of recovery at their “home” hospital, Pen Bay Medical Center. The Falla’s pediatrician Dr. Peter Vickerman monitored their progress and readied them for their transition home. Kristin and Dan call it “The Trifecta of Care” and are deeply appreciative of the care that was there for them when they needed it most.

Today the boys are what Kristin refers to as “full-tilt” kids, enjoying sports activities and outdoor play like the incident never happened. They especially enjoy family boat outings and fishing in beautiful Tenant’s Harbor as they grow up healthy and strong.
