February 08, 2019
NORTH CONWAY, NH – Families in Mount Washington Valley and western Maine have a new option for pediatric care, as Memorial Hospital welcomes Wenda Saunders, MD to their primary care practice. Dr. Saunders is a board-certified pediatrician who cares for patients ages newborn to 21. After 26 years at Bridgton Hospital, she now is practicing at the MWV Rural Health practice at Memorial Hospital in North Conway, NH.
Dr. Saunders’ philosophy of care involves partnering with parents and families to take care for their child. She shared, “They are the experts about the child, so we work together as a team. It makes my job easier!”
In her last practice, Dr. Saunders was lead pediatrician and implemented autism and developmental screening protocols and routine screenings for behavioral and mental health concerns at well child visits. Dr. Saunders is also passionate about the importance of childhood vaccines and consistently exceeds quality goals around vaccination rates. Since joining Memorial, Dr. Saunders has taken a leadership role around vaccinations, conducting learning sessions with clinical staff and working to define standard vaccination schedules for all pediatric patients. She believes that Memorial’s recent move to the Epic electronic health record system will help to ensure children receive the proper vaccines to protect from childhood illnesses.
Dr. Saunders encourages parents to ensure their children receive the influenza vaccine. “Flu season is just ramping up, so it’s not too late to get vaccinated. Last year, 185 kids died of influenza nationwide. Out of them, 80% were unimmunized, and 49% were previously healthy kids without other complicating health factors.”
She also likes to be proactive around water safety issues and, Lyme disease prevention, both topics that are relevant in a rural community surrounded by the great outdoors with many lakes, streams and ticks.
And the great outdoors is part of the attraction of North Conway for Dr. Saunders and her family. She shares that she and her husband, Skip, enjoy skiing, hiking, biking and road races. They have two adult children, ages 24 and 19, and a dog named Jackson. She looks forward to being part of the ski culture in North Conway, having worked as a ski instructor at Shawnee Peak as a teen, as well as a teaching stint at Steamboat Springs.
Dr. Saunders received her education at Boston University, and her pediatric internship and residency at Boston City Hospital. She was chief of Medical Staff for Bridgton Hospital from 2016-18.
