Maine Medical Center Pays Tribute to President George H. W. Bush

Former U.S. President was a friend of Maine and supporter of The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital

PORTLAND, Maine — Maine Medical Center recognizes the passing of former U.S. President George H.W. Bush.

“We were fortunate that former U.S. President George H.W. Bush considered Maine his home and that he shared many special occasions with us alongside his wife, Barbara Bush, here at the hospital,” said Rich Petersen, MMC President and CEO. “President Bush exemplified leadership, empathy and goodwill. The state of Maine, Maine Medical Center and The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital have lost a close and dear friend.”

President and Mrs. Bush, who died on April 17, 2018, joined MMC in 1995 for the announcement that Maine’s only children’s hospital would be named in honor of First Lady Barbara Bush. President Bush’s first connection to the hospital predated the ceremony when he came to MMC while serving as Vice President in 1985. Since then, President and Mrs. Bush became important members of the Maine Medical Center family. That relationship has grown over time as several other members of the Bush family have become supporters and visitors to the children’s hospital.

The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at MMC is committed to enhancing the lives of children. With more than 100,000 annual patient visits, the hospital offers services in cancer treatment, surgery, cardiology, neonatal and pediatric intensive care, and numerous other pediatric specialties. Maine’s only certified children’s hospital is designed with children in mind with state-of-the-art hospital equipment, specialty programs and spacious play areas.

The former President and his wife visited The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center many times over the years. Their support inspired children and their families, as well as countless MMC care providers. The couple’s dedication to children’s health and other causes, such as literacy, helped rally thousands of supporters in and around Maine. Their positive impact will last for generations to come.

Bush’s daughter-in-law, Margaret Bush, is the wife of Marvin Bush, President Bush and Barbara Bush’s youngest son. She is a member of the Maine Medical Center Board of Trustees, carrying on the legacy of family support and involvement with the hospital.
