MMC “tops off” East Tower expansion with traditional ceremony

mmc topping off ceremony
Construction on Maine Medical Center’s East Tower hit a milestone Wednesday, as construction crews held the traditional “topping off” ceremony, a long-standing practice amongst builders to celebrate the raising of the last beam of a building.

The last beam on the East Tower was covered with signatures of MMC colleagues and well-wishers, many of them writing personal messages that are now a permanent part of the addition. Contractors working with Turner Construction used a crane to lift that beam, along with an American flag and a small tree, a nod to an ancient belief that tree-dwelling spirits who are displaced by the construction need to be appeased.

“This is an important milestone in our project, and I’m glad so many of our colleagues and visitors had a chance to take part by signing the beam,” said Jeff Sanders, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “By the end of next year, this addition will be meeting a critical need in our community, housing two patient care floors with 64 new oncology patient rooms.”
