PORTLAND, Maine — Maine Medical Partners announces the following new hires.

Bottom: Karen Dmytrasz, M.D. and Toby Fitzgerald, D.O.
Karen Dmytrasz, M.D., has joined Maine Medical Partners – Geriatric Medicine. Dr. Dmytrasz will be seeing patients at the outpatient Geriatric Center, St. Joseph’s Rehabilitation and Residence, and other nursing home locations. She will also be the interim Medical Director at Hospice of Southern Maine. Dr. Dmytrasz completed her Geriatrics Fellowship and Family Medicine Residency here at Maine Medical Center. Prior to relocating to Portland, Dr. Dmytrasz received her medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA. Her clinical interests include optimizing quality of life for older adults living in nursing homes and applying a systematic approach to manage symptoms in the hospice setting. Dr. Dmytrasz also has a passion for teaching medical students and residents at the point-of-care. In her spare time, Dr. Dmytrasz enjoys biking, reading, travel, cooking with friends and spending time with her family.

Claudia Picone, M.D., has joined Maine Medical Partners – Hospital Medicine. Dr. Picone is Board certified in Internal Medicine and comes to us from Eastern Maine Medical Center and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bangor. She received her medical degree from University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Picone completed her family practice residency at St. Margaret Memorial Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA and her internal medicine residency at York Hospital in York, PA. Her clinical interests complicated interdisciplinary patients, and especially caring for the elderly and developmentally disadvantaged. Dr. Picone has been involved in many not-for-profit projects, including The Wounded Warrior Project and The International Red Cross. In her spare time, she enjoys stand up paddle boarding, skiing and family game nights with her husband and three silly kids.

Forest R. Sheppard, M.D., has joined Maine Medical Partners – Acute Care Surgery. He is Board certified in Surgery and the subspecialty of Surgical Critical Care by the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Sheppard received his medical degree from University of Virginia School of Medicine and completed his residency, NIH sponsored Trauma Research Fellowship and Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He is fellowship trained in Trauma and Surgical Critical Care. Clinically, he is particularly interested in traumatic hemorrhagic shock, resuscitation, coagulation and the inflammatory response to injury and illness. In Dr. Sheppard’s spare time he enjoys fishing, the outdoors, sports and spending time with his wife and four sons.

Nathan J. Aranson, M.D., RPVI, has joined Maine Medical Partners – Surgical Care. Dr. Aranson is double board certified in General and Vascular Surgery. After receiving his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, he completed his residency at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. During residency, he spent two years as a Vascular Surgery research fellow at Harvard Medical School studying targeted thrombolytic therapy. He also completed a clinical fellowship in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital. After fellowship, he worked at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle for two years, caring for patients across the spectrum of vascular illness. He is particularly interested in the treatment of aortic disease, including complex aneurysm and thoracic dissection, and novel treatments for carotid disease in stroke prevention and instructs surgeons nationwide on the minimally invasive transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR) procedure.

In his spare time, Dr. Aranson enjoys the seasonal outdoor pursuits that Maine has to offer; from hiking in Baxter and Acadia National Parks, to skiing at Sunday River, and fishing on Casco Bay. He is very excited to return to the place of his birth and service the people of the great state of Maine like his father and grandfather before him; both previously working at the Maine Medical Center.

Toby Fitzgerald, D.O., has joined Maine Medical Partners – Maternal Fetal Medicine. Board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Fitzgerald will be seeing patients at the MMP - MFM practice in Portland. She has been practicing in the Portland area since 2010. Dr. Fitzgerald received her medical degree from University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her residency at Maine Medical Center. Professionally, her interests include minimally invasive GYN surgery, labor support and international women's health care. She spent time in India and Colombia during her training. In her spare time, she enjoys yoga, hiking, gardening, skiing, traveling and spending time with her family.
