MaineHealth Hospitals Awarded Gold Level for Tobacco-Free Initiatives

October 05, 2017

Sarah Mayberry of the MaineHealth Center for Tobacco Independence (center) presents the gold level award to Cindy Cronkhite and Laurie Soucy of Franklin Memorial Hospital.

The Breathe Easy Tobacco-Free Hospital initiative at the MaineHealth Center for Tobacco Independence has awarded all MaineHealth member and affiliate hospitals in the state with gold level status – the highest achievement – through its 2017 Gold Star Standards of Excellence Program. This annual initiative recognizes hospitals for addressing tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke through evidence-based policies and procedures.

“Smoking is the number one cause of preventable disease and death in Maine,” said Deborah Deatrick, senior vice president of community health at MaineHealth. “This award highlights the important efforts underway at all MaineHealth member and affiliate hospitals to create smoke and tobacco-free campus environments for our patients, employees, and community members.”

Franklin Memorial Hospital and Pen Bay Medical Center were recognized at the gold level for the seventh year in a row, the only MaineHealth hospitals to earn this achievement.

Among the individual awards, Casey Lancaster of Southern Maine Health Care, Penny York of Stephens Memorial Hospital, and the Tobacco-Free Policy Committee at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center were recognized as Gold Star Champions for demonstrating strong leadership and advocacy for tobacco-free environments and resources.

All Maine hospitals that met at least seven of the 10 standards were invited to apply for the awards, and were recognized at the gold, silver or bronze level depending on the number of standards they met. Award levels are based on best practice criteria such as a smoke and tobacco-free campus policy, annual screening for tobacco use, referral to tobacco treatment and supporting employee education related to tobacco treatment.
