Application Process

The Maine Medical Center (MMC) Integrated Interventional Radiology (IR) Residency Program only accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).  Please note the ERAS 2021 Residency Timeline.  Our program’s application deadline is historically October 1st, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic our 2020-21 deadline has been extended until November 15, 2020.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for appointment to the MMC Integrated IR Residency Program, residents must successfully complete a pre-requisite year of direct patient care in a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), or College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). Because the MMC Integrated IR Residency Program is categorical, the majority of residents complete this year at MMC.

Residents are required to complete the pre-requisite year in a clinical-based specialty (surgery is preferred). A research year alone is not sufficient. The categorical MMC Integrated IR Residency Program includes a preliminary surgery pre-requisite year at MMC.

The pre-requisite year must include a minimum of 36 weeks in direct patient care. Elective rotations in IR or diagnostic radiology must occur only in radiology departments with an ACGME-accredited diagnostic radiology or IR residency program, or an RCPSC-accredited diagnostic radiology residency program, and must not exceed a combined total of eight weeks.

The MMC Integrated IR Residency Program must receive verification of each applicant’s level of competency in the required clinical field using ACGME or CanMEDS Milestones assessments from the prior training program.

Only applicants with qualifications as required by the ACGME are considered eligible for residency positions. Applicants with one of the following qualifications are eligible for appointment to the MMC Integrated IR Residency Program:

  1. Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
  2. Graduates of colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
  3. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who meet one of the following qualifications:
    • Have received a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates prior to appointment, or,
    • Have a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a US licensing jurisdiction in which they are training or practicing.
  4. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States who have completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME accredited medical school.

The MMC Department of Medical Education will sponsor matched international candidates with J-visas only.

Selection of Residents

The MMC Integrated IR Residency Program follows the Institutional Graduate Medical Education (GME) Policy on Resident/Fellow Selection. Residents are selected on a fair and equal basis without regard to gender, age, religion, ethnicity, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, veteran status, or any other applicable legally protected status. Selection is based upon the applicant's ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills, and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity.

Prior to being selected as a match applicant for the MMC Integrated IR Residency Program, each candidate is interviewed at MMC in order to assess personal qualities such as motivation and integrity, and ability to communicate. Unless there are extraordinary circumstances, applicants recruited outside the match must be interviewed at MMC.

1. The MMC Integrated IR Residency Program participates in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) Main Residency Match.  Recruitment practices follow procedures outlined by the NRMP.  Candidates for positions outside The Match are reviewed and approved by the Designated Institutional Official (DIO), or, in his/her absence, by the Vice President of Medical Education.

 2. All applicants are required to complete an application through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and submit this along with a personal statement, letters of recommendation (3), Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE or “Dean’s Letter”), medical school transcript, ECFMG Status Report (IMGs only), photograph, and USMLE and/or COMLEX-USA transcripts.  All applicants must have successfully passed the USMLE Step 1 exam.  The application deadline is historically October 1st, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic our 2020-21 deadline has been extended until November 15th.

3. The Program Director and Associate Program Director screen applications and select applicants for interview based upon the following factors:

  • USMLE scores
  • Class rank
  • Number of “Honors” grades earned during third-year clerkships
  • Demonstrated interest in IR
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Personal statement
  • Exceptional talent

4. Personal interviews are granted to those applicants selected through the screening process. Unless there are extraordinary circumstances, applicants recruited outside The Match must be interviewed at MMC. The applicants meet with the IR Residency Program Director, Associate Program Director, Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program Director or Associate Program Director, additional faculty members, and at least one resident. Applicants are assessed for their overall presentation and fit for the program. In keeping with ACGME and NRMP requirements, all interviewed applicants will have an opportunity to review the MMC policies on visas, stipends, and benefits, as well as a sample MMC contract available on the Department of Medical Education (DME) website.

5. At the end of the interviewing period, a final score will be generated for each applicant. The Residency Selection Committee (comprised of the individuals listed above) objectively evaluates each candidate and prepares a list of applicants in rank order, which is then entered for the NRMP.

6. Any resident who has a disability (according to the Americans with Disabilities Act) and/or special restrictions on his/her medical license MUST report this information to the Program Director and the DME no later than the first day his/her residency program begins.

Interview dates for the 2021 NRMP Main Residency Match:

  • January 13, 2021
  • January 14, 2021
  • January 22, 2021

Resident transfers from ACGME- or RCPSC-accredited diagnostic radiology programs into the MMC Integrated IR Residency Program must be limited to transfers from within the same Sponsoring Institution and must meet the following qualifications for transfer:

  • Transfers into the PGY-3 or PGY-4 years must be from the equivalent level in the diagnostic radiology program.
  • Residents transferring into the PGY-5 year must have taken or be eligible to take the American Board of Radiology (ABR) Core Exam, and must have successfully completed at least three rotations in IR.
