Resources for Family and Friends

You're not alone!

"Families are the shadow mental health system in America, unheralded and unsung..." ~ Dr. Joyce Burland

We understand the challenges faced by family members and friends who have a loved one with mental illness.  They must learn to support someone they no longer know and understand an illness they know little about. In this way, family members are often relied upon to be caregivers, researchers, navigators and advocates for their loved one. We recognize the value of family members in the treatment process. Here are some useful resources to help guide you.

Current Research

As part of the Center for Psychiatric Research at Maine Medical Center, many of our doctors conduct groundbreaking research. If you're curious about the most recent research in mental health topics, the Center is a great resource.

Whether your loved one is experiencing depression, anxiety, PTSD or other mental illness, it helps to understand what mental illness is all about.
