SMH 2011 Child Safety Seat Inspection Recap

In January 2011 Stephens Memorial Hospital began offering Child Safety Seat Inspection events.  These events are free and available to the community as an opportunity to learn more about how to properly use your child safety seat.  In 2011 SMH held four events in which we educated 70 caregivers and inspected a total of 60 car seats (39 car seats at events and 21 car seats through appointments at the hospital).  Of the seats that were inspected by Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians, 96% were incorrectly installed or uninstalled upon arrival.

Stephens Memorial Hospital is not only an inspection site but also is one of several distribution sites for car seats in the state of Maine.  As a distribution site we are authorized to provide car seats and boosters to families at no cost if they meet the State financial requirements.  In 2011 we distributed a total of 20 free seats to income qualified families through our separate Distribution Program.

We are pleased by the success of the program in 2011 and look forward to helping more families in 2012.  Currently we have four Child Safety Seat Inspection events scheduled for 2012 in conjunction with the Norway Fire Department who provide weather protected space for our events.   Our next safety check is scheduled for Saturday, February 18, 2012 at the 'heated' Norway Fire Department from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will be available to provide free hands-on seat inspections.  It is not necessary for you to have the child with you but if possible it is best to bring them. Child care will be available as needed.
