Chagrasulis President of ACEP

Western Maine Health President and Chief Executive Officer Timothy A. Churchill recently announced that Dr. Rebecca Chagrasulis, an emergency physician at Stephens Memorial Hospital, has been elected President of the Maine Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).  A member of the professional organization since 1991, she will serve a 2 year term as President.

Dr. Chagrasulis has been practicing at Stephens Memorial Hospital since 1987.  During her tenure at SMH she has served as the Medical Director of PACE Paramedic Service, monitoring pre-hospital care of patients, and she is currently the Director of the Emergency Department.   In September 2010, Dr. Chagrasulis was appointed Regional Medical Director to the State Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Board for the Tri-County Region

During her two year term as ACEP - Maine President, Chagrasulis will help lead the organization in fulfilling two important health care initiatives: one involves a cause very close to home, and an issue she deals with every day: staffing in rural emergency departments and the shortage of residents coming to work to fill these positions.  A second initiative, already being addressed is the problem of prescription drug abuse.  The state chapter of ACEP has received a grant from the national organization to allow for educational seminars for emergency room staff.

ACEP often partners with other professional organizations such as the emergency nurses association, or the Maine Medical Association.  Chagrasulis shares that her associations with the EMS Board as well as contacts she has in emergency medicine will be valuable resources in her new position.

Dr. Chagrasulis earned her medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine and completed her training at the Greenville Hospital System in Greenville, SC.  She is Board Certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.  Before coming full time to SMH she was the State of Maine EMS Medical Director from 1996 - 2000.
