Western Maine Health Vice President of Clinical Services, M. Patricia Cook, RN, MBA, EdD, announced recently that Stephens Memorial Hospital (SMH) Registered Nurse Karen Ferris, RN-C who works on Medical/Surgical department has become certified in Medical/Surgical Nursing.
This is an intensive program which compounds years of experience and months of studying with an exam, developed by the National Certification Corporation that focuses medical surgical nursing. A class was offered at SMH over the summer, and Karen was the first of the participating nurses to complete the examination.
The Medical Surgical Certification exam is offered to nurses who work in Medical Surgical area in acute care settings. They are required to not only understand the physiological indicators associated with their patients' illnesses but also the social, emotional, and behavioral factors that impact the patient and their health. Criteria for sitting for the exam include being a licensed RN with a minimum of 2 years experience, having worked a minimum of 2000 hours. The RN must also complete 30 hours of continuing education in the 3 years prior to your exam.
Nurse Director of the Medical/Surgical and Intensive Care Departments, Anita Day, RN, MSN states, "Karen has provided our patients with excellent care since coming to us as a new graduate in 2006. She worked on the night shift and soon became one of the more experienced nurses providing valuable advice to new nurses. She recently moved to the day shift and continues to provide the same thoughtful care. Karen has shown real dedication to her profession by taking the next step and achieving certification in her specialty. This takes a true commitment of time in reaching this goal. SMH is fortunate to have her on their team and we look forward to her being here for a long time."
Ferris has been employed at the SMH for nearly 5 years. She earned her bachelor of nursing degree from the University of Southern Maine. Karen also possesses a degree in Social Services and is ACLS and PALS certified as well. She resides in Norway with her son.
