Talk with a health educator - MaineHealth Learning Resource Center

The Family Birthplace at Stephens Memorial Hospital announces upcoming information sessions for parents regarding the $500 grant from the Alfond Scholarship Foundation.  The next sessions will be held on Thursday, June 4th from 5:30 - 8:00 pm in the Harper Conference Center in the Ripley Medical Building next to Stephens Memorial Hospital.

Maine babies born on or after Jan. 1, 2009 are eligible to receive a $500 Harold Alfond College Challenge grant to open a college savings account to help pay for education beyond high school. Noted late philanthropist Harold Alfond created this legacy gift to encourage generations of Maine children to attend college and help create a better future for themselves and Maine.

The Harold Alfond College Challenge grant will be credited to a NextGen College Investing Plan® account when opened by the family for the benefit of the baby before the child's first birthday. The Finance Authority of Maine (FAME) administers the program. No additional contributions are required and there are no income limits. However, it was Mr. Alfond's hope that friends, family members and businesses would rise to the challenge and invest in the future and educational aspirations of Maine's children.

Families who have had or who are expecting a baby in 2009 are welcome to attend, no registration is necessary. For more information please visit

The Family Birthplace is happy to be able to pass along information to parents to educate them on this wonderful opportunity.
