Western Maine Health Vice President of Clinical Services, M. Patricia Cook, RN, MBA, EdD, announced recently that Stephens Memorial Hospital Registered Nurse Jo Elliott, RN successfully passed the ANCC Medical Surgical Certification exam.

The Medical Surgical Certification exam is offered to nurses who work in Medical Surgical area in acute care settings.  They are required to not only understand the physiological indicators associated with their patients' illnesses but also the social, emotional, and behavioral factors that impact the patient and their health.  Criteria for sitting for the exam include being a licensed RN with a minimum of 2 years experience, having worked a minimum of 2000 hours.  The RN must also complete 30 hours of continuing education in the 3 years prior to your exam.

When asked how long she had been preparing for this exam, Jo stated, "as long as I have been a nurse."  Elliot has been employed on the Medical/Surgical department at SMH for four years.  She attended nursing school at CMMC School of Nursing, and is currently pursuing her bachelor of science in nursing at USM, with the intent of graduating this December.  Jo also holds a bachelor of science in Nutrition.  She recently attained a Clinical Level III status.  With a special interest in diabetic care, Jo is a member of the Blood Glucose Improvement Task Force as well as the Nursing Evidence Based Practice and Research Council and Leadership and Coordinating Council.  Last year, Jo completed the Clinical Scholars Program at Maine Medical Center.  Her project focused on better control of blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes.

Of Jo, Anita Day, Nurse Manager for Medical/Surgical and the Intensive Care Unit, says, "When Jo began four years ago, she quickly proved herself to be a valuable member of the Med/Surg team as a preceptor and role model for new nurses.  Staff on all shifts recognize her quiet strength and see her constantly striving to do the best.  Her dedication to nursing is evident in her most recent accomplishment.  Jo is an excellent nurse and we want to congratulate her for successfully passing the certification exam."

Jo lives in Rumford with her husband who is also a registered nurse.
