SMH Receives ACR Accreditation

Timothy A. Churchill, President and Chief Executive Officer of Western Maine Health was pleased to announced that Stephens Memorial Hospital (SMH) has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in Stereotactic Breast Biopsy as a result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

The ACR, headquartered in Reston, VA, awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of the practice.  Evaluations are conducted by the board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field.  They assess the qualifications of the personnel and the adequacy of the facility equipment.  The surveyors report their findings to the ACR's Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report.

The ACR is a national organization serving more than 32,000 diagnostic-interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists and nuclear medicine and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive healthcare services.

"I am very proud of our staff," says Tim Ingram, CRA, Director of Clinical Diagnostics, "this distinction demonstrates a commitment to quality patient care and patient safety.  This re-accreditation marks the 10th year that SMH has received this distinction, and with its continual accreditation SMH proves that it has the highest professional standards for providing Breast Biopsy Services."

The Women's Imaging Department at Stephens Memorial Hospital includes Mammography, Ultrasound, and Bone Density and performs close to 5,000 exams a year.  SMH provides up to
300 screenings a year to women who have no insurance or who are underinsured in an effort to make certain women getting their annual mammograms.
