Navarro Appointed to Commission on Cancer Position

Timothy A. Churchill, President and Chief Executive Officer of Western Maine Health announced recently that Fernando A. Navarro, M.D., a General Surgeon with Western Maine Surgery recently received a three-year appointment as Cancer Liaison Physician for the accredited cancer program at Stephens Memorial Hospital (SMH).  Cancer Liaison Physicians are an integral part of cancer programs accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC).

Dr. Navarro, has been a medical staff member at SMH for 3 years and has significant interest in patients with a possible diagnosis of a malignant disease and uses up to date surgical interventions when necessary to treat cancer for area patients.  He is a member of the SMH multidisciplinary cancer committee.
SMH is dedicated to facilitating the delivery of comprehensive quality cancer care.  In 2006, SMH received three-year approval following strict evaluation survey during which the facility showed a "commendation level" of compliance in the following standards: cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, and community outreach.

Dr. Navarro is among 1,600 volunteer physicians who are responsible for providing leadership and direction to establish, maintain, and support their facilities cancer programs.  Cancer Liaison Physicians are responsible for spearheading CoC initiatives within their cancer program,  collaborating with local agencies such as the American Cancer Society and facilitating quality improvement initiatives utilizing data submitted to the CoC's National Cancer Database.  Dr. Navarro will be involved as the Cancer Liaison Physician working with the staff to promote the facilities Commission on Cancer approval and make the program more visible as well as working with the Cancer Committee and improving quality initiatives through the use of data provided by the National Cancer Database.

Dr. Navarro graduated from Medical School at Escuela Comobiana de Medicina in Columbia, South America in 1996.  From 1999 - 2001 he was a Research Fellow at Brigham & Women's Hospital, he then completed his internship in General Surgery at Boston University Medical Center.  His residency in General Surgery was at Maine Medical Center from 2002 - 2006.  In 2007 he became Board Certified in General Surgery.

Dr. Navarro resides in Norway with his wife and their son.
