SMH Celebrates Perioperative Nurses Week

Western Maine Health Senior Vice President of Clinical, M. Patricia Cook, RN, BSN, EdD was pleased to announce that Stephens Memorial Hospital is honoring perioperative nurses during the week of November 9-15th for national Perioperative Nurse Week.
The Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN) members voted on this year's theme and chose: Perioperative Nurses: Influencing the Future of Safe Patient Care.

Some of the challenges issued to nurses in coordination with this week are an essay contest, the chance to mentor students or peers and influence the future of perioperative nursing through learning, focusing on safety of patient care, or hosting an education session or open house for the public.

At SMH, a slide presentation on perioperative nursing will be shown down in the Surgical Services suite as a means to provide information to patients and their families regarding this nursing specialty.  Leah Frechette, the new OR Nurse Educator has been putting together a staff competency program to further ensure patient safety.

SMH boasts 20 RNs in the Surgical Services Department.  The average length of employment for most of these nurses is over 15 years, which is a credit to the staff as well as the hospital.  Two of these nurses are certified in OR nursing and one is certified in Peri-Anesthesia nursing.

Beverly Snow, Nurse Director of the OR shares, "The perioperative nurses in Surgical Services provide the base for the great team we have.  They are dedicated to providing excellent care to our patients by working with the physicians and other members of the surgical team.  Our community can be proud of the professional nursing qualities the perioperative nurses of Stephens Memorial Hospital bring to them."
