SMH Installs New Mobile C-arm System

Western Maine Health President and Chief Executive Officer Timothy A. Churchill announced today that Stephens Memorial Hospital has installed a new Philips BV Pulsera Mobile c-arm system in the Surgical Services department.

The mobile c-arm was acquired in part, from funds received through the 2008 Summer Appeal, and is used in surgical procedures as well as minimally invasive procedures as it provides a clear view by dynamic images during these surgeries.  The c-arm is equipped to handle surgeries ranging from cardiovascular and neurosurgical procedures to orthopedic surgery.

Timothy Ingram, Director of Clinical Services explains that the new system is more advanced providing even greater service to physicians.  It offers real time picture imaging before, during, and after surgery or procedures, allowing physicians to see what is going on at every moment.  It also communicates with the picture archiving and communication system (PACS) allowing physicians to retrieve previous films of the patients that may need to be viewed during surgery.

Stephen Barr, M.D., of Maine Orthopaedic Center, with an office in the Ripley Building in Norway states, "As the baby boomers are aging and hip fractures are becoming more frequent and osteoporosis makes the definition of bone difficult to see with imaging, this machine is far better at delineating the anatomy & outline of the bone with osteoporosis and the visualization is improved fivefold.  Secondly, there is better definition during the regular cases where we use inter-operative x-rays to help guide ourselves in the reduction and fixation of fractures.  Thirdly, it says something about Stephens Memorial Hospital that they made the financial commitment to get such a good machine and improve the overall quality of care to the orthopedic patients."

Stephens Memorial Hospital is part of Western Maine Health, a member of the Maine Health® family.
