SMH Literature &  Medicine Partnership

Western Maine Health President and Chief Executive Officer Timothy A. Churchill announced today that Stephens Memorial Hospital has been recognized by the Maine Humanities Council for their exemplary public service as a Literature & Medicine Program Partner Hospital.

Literature & Medicine is a book discussion program devised by the Maine Humanities Council. Deborah Clark, librarian at Western Maine Health shared that the Literature & Medicine program at the hospital has been going on for five years, with as many as 20 participants each time it meets, including physicians, nursing and other hospital staff as well as hospital administrators.  Clark is very proud of the recognition, and continued participation of SMH, "Management has been very supportive of our program which is vital to its survival."

The group is free to employees and is lead by a facilitator, usually a college professor.  Book choices range from novels to non-fiction to poetry and usually have relevance to health care or medicine, leading the group to think about the human side of the care they provide patients.

The group at SMH usually meets during the winter months, and Clark states, "This provides a nice winter break and is a wonderful way to get to know coworkers better and learn about the challenges health care professionals face while providing patient care.  Everyone comes with a different point of view that can be eye-opening and very intellectually stimulating."
