Two SMH Certified Surgical Technologists Attend Conference

Sherri Shaw-Davidson, CST and Rhonda Paine, CST, both Certified Surgical Technologists from Stephens Memorial Hospital's Surgical Services department recently attended the 2008 National Conference for the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST).  The five day conference at the end of May was an information-packed educational opportunity with sessions presented on a range of surgical technique updates and also the role of the CST.

The AST conference was held in Orlando this year and featured the theme "Empower our Community."  The conference helps the members of the AST achieve their continuing education hours which are required to maintain their certifications.   Some of the topics that Paine & Shaw-Davidson enjoyed were on professionalism of the CST, surgical safety, preparing for mass casualty occurrences, orthopedic issues in the OR and the linking of CSTs to third world missionary work.

Certified Surgical Technologists (CST) work in the operating room setting up the equipment and instrumentation for surgical procedures, they maintain the sterile field and pass instruments to the surgeons.  They are trained to anticipate the surgeons needs and preferences.  Both Shaw-Davidson and Paine state that the CSTs, RNs, anesthesia providers and surgeons work together as a tight surgical team.  There are six CSTs at SMH who work during the week and also rotate on call for surgical procedures and caesarean sections that occur off hours.  All have been through the School of Surgical Technology program at Maine Medical Center and are required to recertify every four years.  They also need to maintain continuing education credits to stay up to date in their field.

The supervisor in the surgical services department is a promoter of education and encouraged Shaw-Davidson and Paine to attend the conference.  Both thought it was very beneficial and are pleased that
two of their colleagues at SMH will be able to attend next year.  Sherri Shaw-Davidson shared, "It's very gratifying to attend a National conference, where everyone shares the same professional
challenges and experiences."Scrubs" from all over the country, come to learn and share their pride in what we do. We returned with such renewed enthusiasm for our profession and our hospital."   Sherri has worked at SMH for 5 years and lives in Fryeburg with her husband.
Rhonda Paine is a 21 year veteran of SMH and states, "This was an excellent conference. It was such a great experience for me. It was very uplifting. I want to thank the Hospital for their support, giving us the opportunity to attend."

Rhonda lives in South Paris with her husband and 2 children.
