Thurston & Elliott Achieve Status of Clinical Level III Nurse

Registered nurses Karen Thurston, BS and Jo Elliott, RN  have obtained the status of Clinical Nurse III in the Nursing Advancement Program at Stephens Memorial Hospital (SMH). The Nursing Advancement Program was established to enhance professional growth and development, and recognize achievements. Level III Clinical Nurses demonstrate consistently high standards of caring, expertise, professional behavior, leadership, communication skills and extraordinary attention to safety.

Thurston has worked in The Family Birthplace at SMH for 7 years.  Prior to starting at the hospital she worked at Maine General Hospital in Waterville and attended the University of Maine, attaining a bachelor of science degree in nursing.  Karen serves on the SMH Magnet Committee as well as two Nursing Councils that are part of the Shared Governance System recently adopted by nursing.  Karen is a certified breast feeding counselor and teaches neonatal resuscitation.

M. Patricia Cook, Senior Vice President Clinical noted, "Karen is respected by her peers for her expert clinical knowledge and her willingness to share it with others, she is always positive and is a role model for staff."
Karen lives in Rumford with her husband and their 6 children.  They also raise show heifers and with her knowledge of childbirth Karen helps deliver calves.

Elliot has been employed on the Medical/Surgical department at SMH for three years.  She attended nursing school at CMMC School of Nursing, and is currently pursuing her bachelor of science in nursing at USM.  Jo also holds a bachelor of science in Nutrition.  She recently attained a Clinical Level III status.  Jo is a member of the Blood Glucose Improvement Committee as well as several Nursing Councils that are part of the Shared Governance System recently adopted by nursing. 

Of Jo, Anita Day, Nurse Manager for Medical/Surgical and the Intensive Care Unit, says, "Jo has quickly become a high quality valued member of the Med/Surg team.  She is a preceptor to new employees, active in multiple committees and recently completed an intense three day course in Diabetes Management and is currently completing a course covering the care of patients in ICU.  Jo is a resource to her peers and exemplifies the iCare values of SMH."

Jo lives in Rumford with her husband.
