SMH Lights Christmas Tree

Stephens Memorial Hospital celebrated the beginning of the holiday season on Wednesday evening, December 5th, with the annual lighting of the Christmas Tree.  A large crowd enjoyed the festivities and lighting outside before retiring inside for hot cocoa and refreshments.

Rev. Don Mayberry, Chair of the Western Maine Health Board of Trustees welcomed the group stating it was nice that we are able to continue this tradition and "Be as we are - a community together.  Mayberry introduced Rev. Anne Stanley who led the invocation.  Fellow Board Member Wendy Penley, led the countdown to the tree lighting.  Four on a Match, the female barbershop quartet comprised of Alda Reynolds, Auburn who sings lead, Suzanne Bartlett of Bethel who sings bass, Rosalie Fredricks of Lewiston who sings baratone, and Darlene Glover of South Paris who sings tenor and is also the Nurse Manager of the Emergency Room and the ICU at SMH, serenaded the group with several holiday carols before leading the group in the singing of Silent Night.

The Christmas Tree Lighting fundraiser is a tradition that was begun by Alice Cornwall twenty five years ago.  Tree light tickets may be purchased in honor or in memory of someone, and are posted on a board in the hospital lobby as well as published in the annual report.  The funds generated by the event allow Stephens Volunteer Services to lend support to Western Maine Health and continues to enjoy much success thanks to the commitment of the community.

The fundraiser continues thru December 31, 2007.  Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased in the hospital Coffee Shop or in the Administration office.
