SMH RNs Attend National Conference on Magnet

NORWAY, ME - Western Maine Health Vice President of Clinical Services, M. Patricia Cook, RN, MBA, EdD, announced recently that ten Registered Nurses recently returned from a 2-day ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® Conference in Chicago.

Nurses Jeff Lowe, Amy Kahkonen, Judy Allen, Kim DeSanctis, Henry Raymond, Karen Thurston, Darlene Glover, Kevin Hodson, Lisa Heald, and Jo Elliott made the trip to Chicago to participate in the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program® workshop.  The program is aimed at educating staff on the Magnet Recognition Program, its benefits to patient outcomes, and how to establish a work plan for applying for Magnet Accreditation.

The Magnet Recognition Program was developed to recognize health care organizations for excellence, quality in patient care, and innovations in professional nursing practice.  The program is based on quality indicators from the American Nurses Association's Scope and Standards for Nurse Administrators (2004).  Although the indicators are nurse-driven, attaining recognition speaks to high quality patient care throughout the hospital.

Stephens Memorial Hospital, along with hospitals throughout the nation, is exploring the resources and documentation needed to attain Magnet status, a process that occurs over several years.  All aspects of patient care and outcomes, community involvement, utilization of research in patient care practice, nursing education, recruitment and retention, staff and patient satisfaction, and other elements are documented and presented to ANCC for review.  Following document approval, ANCC appraisers come to the hospital for an onsite inspection.

Darlene Glover, RN, MSN, CEN, a long term employee of SMH who and currently the Nurse Manager of the ICU and Emergency Room has been named Magnet Project Coordinator.
