Cake Adorns SMH to Celebrate 50th Anniversary

NORWAY, ME - Dr. Harry L. Harper, one of the first physicians at Stephens Memorial Hospital (SMH), and Western Maine Health President and CEO, Timothy Churchill were on hand on Tuesday, March 6th to celebrate the completion of the latest addition to the hospital and thank those who built it.  In honor of the 50th anniversary of SMH, an oversized cake adorns the top of the portico at the front entrance of the hospital.  The cake was the brainchild of Frank Shorey, former trustee and a member of the Community Relations and Development Committee, who wanted a very visible way to commemorate the hospitals anniversary for passers by to see.

Shorey enlisted the aid of Al Bancroft, who worked with Fred Spielman, Lester Williams, and Jack Richardson, who donated their time to design and build the cake.   The cake is hollow to allow for snow and rain to pass through and drain off the roof and it is secured to the roof.  Sunday, February 25th was the date of liftoff for the cake, which was hoisted on to the roof of SMH with a Bancroft Contracting crane.  The cake will remain on top of the portico for the balance of 2007.
