Western Maine Health Awarded Grant from New Balance Foundation

Timothy A. Churchill, President and CEO of Western Maine Health announced today that Western Maine Health (WMH) was recently awarded a $160,000 grant from The New Balance Foundation to be designated towards the development of the Riverside Trail.

The Riverside Trail is a yet to be constructed piece of trail that will connect the Viking Trail at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School and the trail at the Oxford Hills Middle School.  When completed the trail will be suitable for multiple outdoor activities, be wheelchair accessible and stroller friendly, and the site of ongoing physical activity programs for the entire community.

"Healthy Oxford Hills, which is part of Western Maine Health, as well as our local pediatricians and schools, all share the same goal of reducing childhood obesity.  This grant from The New Balance Foundation for The Riverside Trail will help us greatly with our local programming efforts in this area," says Pat Cook, Senior Vice President, Clinical at Stephens Memorial Hospital.

"We are excited to provided support for The Riverside Trail in Oxford Hills to help increase physical activity opportunities for area children and adults," says Anne Davis, Managing Trustee of the New Balance Foundation.  New Balance Athletic Shoe, Inc. has three Maine manufacturing facilities in Norridgewock, Skowhegan and Norway.

Programs and special events will be rolled out when the Riverside Trail is completed in an effort to create and fun and safe environment for area residents of all ages.  Programs currently being discussed include cross country skiing and snowshoeing, nature identification programs, and a walking school bus.  The Riverside Trail is currently in the planning stages with work to begin in spring 2007.

The Riverside Trail project is the result of coordinated efforts between WMH, Healthy Oxford Hills, SAD #17, including Oxford Hills Middle and High Schools, as well as the Norway and Paris recreation departments, to tackle the issue of obesity in Oxford Hills.
