On Friday, December 1, Western Maine Health and the Substance Abuse Services Committee at Stephens Memorial Hospital will host a day long conference, Alcoholism and Drug Addiction: Disease, Treatment & Recovery Update #6.  This annual conference was begun in an effort to reach many different members of the community with valuable information regarding substance abuse. 

The educational session is open to all area residents, Employers, Human Resource Directors, Educators, Substance Abuse Counselors, Law Enforcement and Judicial personnel, Physicians, Nurses, Clergy, Social Service Workers, Guidance Counselors, people in recovery and family members and friends affected by someone else's drinking and drugging, and others wanting to know more about alcohol and drug addictions.

Anthony J. Kozma D.O. of Mercy Recovery Services Westbrook will be the featured speaker.  Other scheduled speakers include: Linda Frazier of the
Darlene Glover, Nurse Manager of Emergency Services at Stephens Memorial Hospital, Special Agent Tony Milligan and Supervisor/Special Agent Gerry Baril of the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, William Stockwell, chair of the committee, and John D. McElwee, district court judge, District 11.   Presentations by local substance abuse counselors will round out the day; there will also be anonymous presentations about recovery and the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, Al Anon, and Narcotics Anonymous.

The conference will be held in the Harper Conference Center in the Ripley Medical Building at Stephens Memorial Hospital, and will run from 9:00a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  The cost of the conference is $10 per person and lunch will be provided.  Pre-registration is required and forms are located at Community Concepts and in the lobby at Stephens Memorial Hospital.
