Western Maine Health in cooperation with The Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program (MBCHP) will be hosting a free screening event at Stephens Memorial Hospital.
MBCHP is a non-profit breast and cervical screening program for women in Maine. MBCHP, funded through a cooperative agreement with federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, provides free mammograms, breast/pelvic exams. and Pap Tests to uninsured and underinsured women ages 40-64 who fall below 250% of the Federal Poverty Line.
Serving the most rural communities in Maine is often a challenge for this screening program and the focus has recently been put on Oxford County in Western Maine. The local American Cancer Society had provided the MBCHP with a small grant to put together a mammography screening day for the women of Oxford County that would qualify for the program. The goal of this project is to increase acess and awareness about not only this free screening program but also the importance of early detection.
The event at Stephens Memorial Hospital will be held on April 4, 2009 from 9am to 2pm, with the hope of screening 35-40 women that day. As an extra incentive for mammography screening registrants, a raffle of a $200.00 Hannaford Supermarket gift card, a $50.00 gas card, and 3 Curves gym passes will be held at the end of the day.
In addition to the mammography screenings; blood pressure screenings, self-breast exam education, and personal beauty treatments will be availabl; as well as Sun Safety Tips with Chriss Hayden and Diabetes Education with Doreen Adams from the Diabetes Education Department at SMH will be taking place.
Pre-registration is required so we can accomododate as many women as possible. Call the number below to register.
