Tobacco Screenings for New Hires

Living tobacco free is essential to a healthy lifestyle. At MaineHealth, we require all employees to complete a tobacco screening within 60 days after enrolling in our health plan.

How do I get a tobacco screening?

The tobacco screening is a urine test. It is performed at a NorDx or Memorial Hospital lab. The labs offer regularly scheduled hours during which you can test.

  • Find a screening location near you.
  • Print out the Tobacco Screening Form and bring it with you to a screening location.
  • Complete the test. Your results will be submitted to MaineHealth.

What happens if I test positive?

If you test positive for tobacco or don’t complete your screening, you will pay a tobacco fee of $46.16 per pay period ($1,200 total per year) in addition to your regular health plan premiums.

You will also pay the fee if you self-declare as a tobacco user during enrollment.

If you are using Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) and test negative for active tobacco use, you will not be charged the $1,200 annual tobacco fee.

We take this test seriously and expect you will, too. Providing a false urine sample is considered a violation of the Ethics Policy and is subject to disciplinary action. Violators will have their prior test result invalidated and will be required to pay all tobacco fees they should have incurred for failing to have a negative test.

What support does MaineHealth offer to help me quit?

MaineHealth offers a free Quit For Life Program ®. If you or your spouse/partner enrolled in a MaineHealth health plan use tobacco, you can enroll in this program at any time.

You and your covered spouse/ partner can then take a tobacco test during the annual WOW! Rewards eligibility period. If you both test negative, the tobacco fee will be removed.
