Two Earn Awards of Distinction

(November 2008) Two Spring Harbor Hospital representatives were honored at the 2008 Hope Awards, sponsored by Shalom House, Inc. of Portland and held during Mental Health Awareness Week in October:

William McFarlane, MD, Psychiatric Research Director, received the Johnson & Korda Innovation Award for his work in the prevention and treatment of serious mental illness. Dr. McFarlane is the chief principal investigator for the Portland Identification and Early Referral (PIER) Project, which detects early symptoms of schizophrenia in young people and helps prevent its most serious effects.

Anne Pringle, Founding Trustee and Chair of the Behavioral Health Services Advisory Committee, won the Community Excellence Award for her contributions as a mental health services advocate and volunteer. A former mayor of Portland, Pringle was also named the 2008 Volunteer of the Year at the Governor's Service Awards program, in part due to her service to individuals with mental illness.

The award recipients were also the subject of a congratulatory ad that appeared in the Portland Press Herald and Forecaster newspapers. Click  here to view a copy of the ad.
