'Social Work Month’ Marked By Donations Drive for the Homeless of York, Cumberland Counties

(March 26, 2008)--In recognition of National Social Work Month, the social work staff of Spring Harbor Hospital in Westbrook and Maine Medical Center's Department of Psychiatry in Portland have orchestrated a month-long donations drive for the Preble Street Resource Center in Portland and the York County Shelter in Alfred.

National Social Work Month has been celebrated in the U.S. each March since 1984. The goal of the month is to recognize the contributions of the social work discipline and advocate for issues affecting social workers and their clients.

To honor what the month means to them, members of the Social Work Peer Committee at the MMC Department of Psychiatry and Spring Harbor Hospital decided to collect donations on behalf of southern Maine's largest homeless shelters.

Items being collected by the social workers include new and gently used articles of clothing and toiletry items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, and bar soap.

Focusing the Peer Committee's celebration on the needs of the homeless was the brainchild of Spring Harbor Hospital Social Work Coordinator Lee D'Attilio, LCSW.

“Our social workers are closely associated with these shelters because we many times serve the same clients,” D'Attilio says. “Social Work Month seemed like a great opportunity to assist these agencies and their clients.”

A collection point for donated items has been set up at Spring Harbor Hospital on Andover Road in Westbrook. Community donations will be accepted there between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. daily through April 3. Donations also are accepted on an ongoing basis at each agency.

“This is such a wonderful gesture by our social work staff,” says Spring Harbor Hospital Chief Nursing & Clinical Officer Mary Jane Krebs, APRN, BC. “I want to thank Lee, the Peer Committee, and individual social workers across our hospital and the Department of Psychiatry for serving the less fortunate as part of their Social Work Month celebration.”

For more information about the donations drive, please contact D'Attilio at 253-2605 or Julie Mulkern at 761-2314.
