Holiday donors bring smiles to patients' faces

(November 15, 2007) Each year, as many as 150 individuals from communities across Maine spend their holidays as patients of Spring Harbor Hospital. To brighten the season, generous community sponsors help Spring Harbor grant its patients' holiday wishes.

Maine businesses and community groups have participated in Spring Harbor's Holiday Adoption Program since 2002. The program matches the wish lists of patients in Spring Harbor's treatment programs with the donor interests of charitable groups.

Typical patient wish list items include plush toys, games, and books, and movie tickets for youth, and clothing, books, gift certificates, and winter outerwear for adults.

"Spending the holidays in the hospital can be very difficult," says Volunteer Resources & Development Manager Julie Mulkern. "That's why Spring Harbor is so grateful for community groups and businesses that partner with us to make the season a bit cheerier for our patients and families."

Among the community groups participating in Spring Harbor's Holiday Adoption Program this year are:
TruChoice Federal Credit Union
Legacy Parenting Company
St. Bartholomew's Church - Cape Elizabeth
Gorham Middle School Student Council
Westbrook Woman's Club
Cape Grange
Mulkern says it is not too late for community sponsors to join this year's program. Two treatment services-one for adults and the other for youth with developmental disorders such as autism--are still in need of holiday sponsors. Community groups or businesses interested in making a difference in the lives of these individuals and their families are urged to contact Mulkern at 207-761-2314 or
