Residency Training

Second-year residents in Maine Medical Center's General Psychiatry Residency perform a six-month rotation on our inpatient care units. Child fellowship candidates spend additional time on our 12-bed children’s unit. All residents learn to work as productive members of our treatment teams, utilizing the principles of focal therapy. Each resident follows approximately six patients under the supervision of one of our staff psychiatrists.

Patient, resident, and treatment team all benefit from the fact that Spring Harbor is a teaching hospital. Our goal is to attract more physicians into the field of psychiatry and to retain their expertise in Maine upon graduation from our program. Roughly 65% of our graduating residents choose to remain in Maine to continue their mental health practice.

In addition to a residency in general psychiatry, physicians may also specialize in child psychiatry and complete a child fellowship at Spring Harbor.
