Why a new Spring Harbor?

Spring Harbor Hospital--southern Maine’s only freestanding hospital for those experiencing severe mental illness or dual disorders--presently leases its 68,000 square-foot facility at 175 Running Hill Road in South Portland. The replacement hospital in Westbrook--due for completion in the spring of 2004--provides the following advantages:

Additional therapy areas on our patient care units. Enhanced therapy space--both in size and appearance--is crucial to providing an environment that promotes healing and recovery. For that reason, the new Spring Harbor Hospital will feature five additional beds, twice as many private rooms, and a roomier footprint for all care units in the facility.

Additional outdoor recreational areas. The new site's 33 acres will allow for the creation of ample outdoor recreational opportunities for both children and adults. The proposed building site borders a game preserve, making it ideal for nature trails and related recreational programming.
