Our Magnet Journey

Congratulations to our nursing staff for earning the prestigious Magnet designation

Congratulations to our nursing staff for earning the prestigious Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center for providing the very best care to their patients. We're proud to be the only acute care hospital in Maine, and among only 3% of American hospitals, to earn this distinction.

The Magnet designation not recognizes our nurses but all of our staff, and reassures you that the best care is in your backyard -- right here at Maine Medical Center.

Through the leadership of our Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President for Nursing, Marjorie Wiggins, RN, BSN, MBA, CNAA, BC, we have come to recognize our nursing excellence and commitment to patient care as Magnet characteristics.

Perched atop Portland's Western Promenade, Maine Medical Center commands views of the Fore River to the south, Back Cove to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the east.  It is from this constant presence of the sea that we developed the logo of the sand dollar.  The sand dollar, for all of its simplicity and beauty, is one of the stronger creatures of the ocean.  The intricate design etched on its shell is representative of the complex work of the nurses at Maine Medical Center.  Through their years of education, dedication, commitment, and pursuit of excellence, they are the heart and soul of the hospital.

When the sand dollar is open, its multi-faceted chambers become evident in the same way the diversity of specialties within Nursing are evident.  Covering all aspects of the human life span, Maine Medical Center nurses pursue excellence through research, education, evidence based practice, and caring for thousands of patients each year.  The sand dollar, with its intricacies, beauty, and strength stands as a symbol of all these things.  So it is with the nurses of Maine Medical Center.  Their pursuit of excellence is a thing of beauty because it is for their patients and their profession that they engage in the Magnet Journey and submit this evidence in support of Magnet Recognition.
