A collaboration among Spring Harbor Hospital, Shalom House, Inc. of Portland, and the State of Maine, the ACTION Program combines stable housing and 24/7 intensive mental health treatment services under one roof. This unique program not only provides more effective support to individuals in need, but it also helps reduce unnecessary demand on community shelters, emergency rooms, and psychiatric hospital beds.
ACTION has new admission criteria for ACT level clients:
- 18 years of age or older
- Full MaineCare benefits
- A diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder or other primary diagnosis that reflects severe problems with emotion regulation
- Individuals for whom engagement in the needed intensity of mental health treatment has been unsuccessful, as evidenced by prior use of services such as case management, individual therapy, psychiatry, or ACT that has been ineffectual
- Three psychiatric hospitalizations within a 12-18 month period OR fewer than 3 psychiatric hospitalizations, but with extensive inpatient length of stay (30+ days) OR a 30-day period, along with use of other community resources, such as mobile crisis or police interaction
