Stereotactic Radiosurgery of Brain Tumors

Stereotactic Radiosurgery of Brain Tumors

Stereotactic radiosurgery is a non-invasive method of treating brain tumors without the difficulties of surgery and long hospital admissions. The radiosurgery technique uses highly precise equipment and three-dimensional computer planning to focus a beam of high dose x-rays to the desired target volume in the brain. The treatment planning process is complex and requires a multidisciplinary approach led by the radiation oncologists and neurosurgeon. The actual treatment can last from 30 minutes to 2 hours. After the procedure, patients are released and are able to return home.

For more information on this treatment technique, please call the Southern Maine Radiation Therapy Institute at (207) 662-2276
