Radiation Oncology

Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) Introduction

Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) is a new type of conformal external beam radiation therapy. It is different from classic external beam radiotherapy and 3D-conformal radiotherapy in that not only are we able to better shape the beam to the tumor, but we are also able to vary the intensity of the beam as it passes near or through non-tumorous tissues. Therefore, we are able to deliver a uniform dose of radiation to the tumor while sparing toxic doses to nearby critical structures.

Planning for IMRT treatment requires specialized CT scans in the treatment position, often with customized immogilization devices. Treatments are then delivered on a daily basis, Monday through Friday.

For more information regarding IMRT at Maine Medical Center, please contact Dr. Celine Godin at (207) 662-2276.
