PORTLAND, Maine – The Maine Tobacco-Free Hospital Network (MTFHN), an initiative of the Breathe Easy Coalition of Maine, has recognized 11 MaineHealth hospitals and strategic affiliates through its 2014 Gold Star Standards of Excellence program. This annual initiative recognizes hospitals for addressing tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke through best practice policies and procedures.
Several MaineHealth employees were recognized as MTFHN Gold Star Champions for their leadership and advocacy for tobacco-free environments and resources at their hospitals. The list includes Maine Medical Center (MMC) Vice President of Adult Medicine Services Wendy Osgood, PT and MMC’s Outpatient Department Clinics Medical Director Stephen DiGiovanni, MD. Mid Coast Hospital (a MaineHealth affiliate) Manager of Employee Health Vicki Koehler, RN, COHN-S and Pulmonary and Tobacco Educator Stacey Schmidt RRT, AE-C, also received the Gold Star Champion designation.
All Maine hospitals that met at least six of the 10 standards were invited to apply for the MTFHN awards, and were recognized at the gold, silver or bronze level depending on the number of standards they met.
Tobacco use continues to be the leading cause of preventable disease and death and a major contributor to health care costs. The recognized hospitals are addressing this issue through comprehensive policies, education, social norm change, and treatment support. The 10 Gold Star Standards of Excellence include creating a 100% tobacco-free campus, implementing evidence-based treatment strategies for patients, divesting from tobacco industry stock, promoting smoke-free lodging options for visitors, and providing tobacco treatment and medication benefits for employees.
MaineHealth President Bill Caron said, “As the leading provider of healthcare in our state, MaineHealth plays a special role in developing outstanding tobacco treatment programs and policies that ensure our environments are safe and healthy for all patients, visitors, and employees. We are pleased with the progress we have made each year in partnership with our member hospitals.”
