System-Wide Patient Satisfaction Measurement
MaineHealth values the patient and family experience in all of its healthcare settings. In order to better understand patient expectations and idenfity opportunities to improve the experience, MaineHealth collects and reports results of patient satisfaction surveys throughout the MaineHealth system. Quality and Improvement Science Education
The Center for Quality & Safety's mission includes improving quality and ongoing education. In keeping with the MaineHealth focused goals, the MH Center for Quality and Safety establishe the Improvement Science Academy. Multilayer program components are designed to engage staff at all levels of the organization in the complex and important work of improving healthcare quality and value. The Academy guides learning by embracing proven tools and techniques from a range of methodologies (e.g. Lean, Microsystems, Triple Aim).

Today’s health professionals practice in an era of unprecedented change, and are confronted with demands for measurable progress toward better care, at lower cost. Throughout the year the Center for Quality & Safety's offers a series of day long seminars and mini classes. By mastering when and how to use proven improvement tools and techniques, participants will learn to add value, efficiency and quality to their work. Participants in these educational seminars learn about the model for improvement and how its application brings value to contemporary health care environments. These classes are open to all MaineHealth employees from any member and affiliate organization.
TeamSTEPPS® is an evidence-based teamwork system aimed at optimizing patient outcomes by improving communication and teamwork skills among health care professionals. It includes a comprehensive set of ready-to-use materials and a training curriculum to successfully integrate teamwork principles into any health care system.MaineHealth is committed to supporting the goal of having highly effective teams function as a core competency in every MaineHealth member and affiliate organization.
TeamSTEPPS® is widely believed by industry experts to dramatically improve safety, spare many lives and save billions of dollars. Teamwork has been found to be one of the key initiatives that can change the culture within healthcare. Many of the tools and methodologies used in TeamSTEPPS® have been taught and widely disseminated within the MaineHealth system. The Center for Quality & Safety provides master coaches to assist in the implementation of TeamSTEPPS® in all MaineHealth hospitals.
The MaineHealth Center for Quality and Safety and a set of core faculty from across the sytem have teamed up to provide TeamSTEPPS® Training to staff across our sytem. The Center has successfully trained sixty nine MH TeamSTEPPS® Master Coaches, who have brought the TeamSTEPPS® training to frontline providers in their hospitals and other health care settings throughout their organizations. Over 1500 staff, including over 160 physicians have attended TeamSTEPPS® training.
MaineHealth Quality and Performance Improvement Network
Is comprised of a group of MaineHealth professionals who demonstrate knowledge of improvement science methodolgy and tools. The intent of this group is to build a learning network of improvement through collaborative learning and professional development. The goal is to support and sustain expert capacity to meet quality and performance improvement needs across the MaineHealth System.
Boards on Board Seminar
Through its commitment to quality, value, and patient safety, the MaineHealth Center for Quality & Safety offers the Boards On Board educational seminar. This event occurs annually and offers board members, performance improvement committees, senior management and system leaders an opportunity to gain a higher level of understanding to enable them to increase their involvement in providing quality, value and patient safety across the system. Expert faculty provide contemporary information and approaches to guide board members and others in leading the quality and safety agenda in their organizations, while patient and family speakers share stories to deepen an awareness of transparency in healthcare.
The foundation for this work is based on the Triple Aim and Quadruple Aim, the National Priorities Partnership Domains and recommendations from organizations such as the National Quality Forum (NQF), Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI).
