MaineHealth Palliative Care - Long-Term Care

Long-Term Care

Palliative care is emerging in long-term care settings. Palliative care is an important service for residents with advanced disease. It helps residents and their family members openly discuss goals of care and make decisions for care toward the end of life.

Hospice care, which includes palliative care for patients with a limited prognosis, can be provided in long-term care facilities, usually by contract with a hospice organization. It's appropriate that hospice and long-term care staff develop good working relationships in order to provide the most effective and coordinated care for their residents.

In 2011, MaineHealth will engage several long-term care facilities in exploring how palliative care can be provided to residents.
