MaineHealth's Laurie Mitchell Receives Wellness Championship Leadership Award From Wellness Council of Maine
PORTLAND, Maine - May 24, 2010 - Laurie Jones Mitchell, R.D., director of employee health improvement for MaineHealth, will receive the individual Irv Marsters Wellness Champion Leadership Award at the Wellness Council of Maine's annual awards banquet on May 25. Mitchell is being recognized as an individual who has contributed significantly to workplace wellness in Maine.
The Irv Marsters award is given to an individual who exhibits leadership in health promotion and wellness; the Wellness Council of Maine decided to honor Mitchell because she serves as a role model through her commitment to the employee wellness program at MaineHealth and her expertise in various roles, including work on the board of Healthy Portland and at local wellness conferences.
At MaineHealth, Mitchell leads the Works on Wellness Program and is responsible for designing and implementing programs for more than 14,000 employees throughout the MaineHealth system. Her efforts focus on health issues that are most prevalent among employees and their family members. Under Mitchell's leadership, MaineHealth has seen increased participation in a benefits-integrated incentive program, which is an alignment of benefit plan design with health improvement strategies. That means high-value preventive services, such as tobacco treatment and smoking deterrents, are covered at 100 percent.
Mitchell has helped design policies and guidelines that address tobacco use and food and nutrition, driving the cultural and environmental changes necessary to support healthy behaviors in the workplace. She has established and trained voluntary, grassroots employee wellness councils throughout the healthcare system to assist with program communication and implementation.
