MaineHealth Announces Appointment
Chief Medical Officer
Vance M. Brown, M.D. "comes home"
to Maine and New England
ME) After an extensive national search, Bill
Caron, President of MaineHealth announced the
appointment of Vance M. Brown, MD as the Chief Medical
Officer (CMO) at MaineHealth. Dr. Brown returns to
Maine, having been born and raised near Waterville.
Dr. Brown joins
MaineHealth from the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, where he
is the medical director and staff physician for the
Cleveland Clinic Foundation Strongsville/Brunswick
Family Health Center. As medical director for a
two-site multi-specialty ambulatory care, diagnostic and
surgical center with annual visits totaling more than
230,000, Dr. Brown manages a staff of 60 physicians and
250 employees. In addition to his work at the
Center, Dr. Brown is also the Chair of the Department of
Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and
Research Director in the Division of Regional Medical

The CMO for
MaineHealth will be integrally involved in, and provide
critical physician input, into system-wide efforts to
improve community health. The position will
provide strategic clinical leadership for MaineHealth
and form strong linkages between system member and
affiliate organizations' leaders and physicians.
The CMO will represent the system internally and
externally on matters of medical delivery, clinical
advancement and integration, quality improvement and
patient safety; developing and/or adopting best
practices to adapt to the national and regional health
Dr. Brown completed
his undergraduate degree in biological sciences from
Stanford University in Palo Alto, California and then
completed his medical degree from Yale University School
of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut. He
completed his postgraduate residency training at the
University of North Carolina Hospitals where he achieved
Chief Residency status in Family Medicine. Dr.
Brown also completed a residency in Emergency Medicine
at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, and a residency
in Internal Medicine from Yale-New Haven Medical Center
in New Haven, CT. Dr. Brown is board certified in
Family Practice by the American Board of Family
Practice; Internal Medicine by the American Board of
Internal Medicine; and by the American Board of Medical
Dr. Brown fills the
CMO position vacated by Robert McArtor, MD who announced
his retirement earlier this year. Dr. McArtor
served in MaineHealth for a total of ten years with the
final eight as Chief Medical Officer. Dr. McArtor
will continue to work with MaineHealth leadership on a
