MaineHealth Announces New Strategic Affiliation

Agreement leverages strengths of local healthcare delivery
with collaborative economies of scale

(Portland, ME)  The MaineHealth Board of Trustees has unanimously approved a strategic affiliation with Pen Bay Healthcare as of January 1, 2008.  This affiliation provides a number of opportunities to work together to improve the health of the communities in the Penobscot Bay region; strengthening the ability to provide high quality, safe patient care to the local communities, while striving to increase access to tertiary services and lowering healthcare costs.

The affiliation will initially focus on seven key clinical and operational areas, including:

  • Electronic linkage to intensivists at MMC (e-ICU Vital Network).
  • Plans for implementing an Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
  • Cancer care expansion, including cooperative clinical trials.
  • Integrated systems to improve treatment of chronic disease such as asthma and diabetes.
  • Supply cost reductions associated with greater group purchasing power.
  • Behavioral health collaboration, including Midcoast Mental Health and Spring Harbor Hospital.
  • Joint grant funding opportunities.

MaineHealth President Bill Caron is honored and proud of the addition of PenBay Healthcare to the MaineHealth family.  "It is exciting to work and collaborate with the outstanding physicians, clinicians and other personnel in PenBay Healthcare. During these discussions, it was very clear that we share a common set of values and beliefs to improve the health of those we serve," Caron said.  "MaineHealth and PenBay Healthcare have been involved in many other collaborative efforts over the years including cardiology, urology, neurology and ENT (ear, nose & throat)," he added.

Roy A. Hitchings, Jr., President and CEO of PenBay Healthcare said, "By working more closely together, we can better serve our communities.  This affiliation will help enhance our ability to locally deliver high quality, safe patient care while striving to restrain health care inflation."
